Lead in the Autism Epidemiology Research Team at the Neurological Disorders Research Center at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute

Dr. Alshaban had his MD from Baghdad College of Medicine, and his Diploma, MSC, and PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology from the United Kingdome. He held many different positions as a scientist working in academic research and as associate professor in Occupational Medicine and Public Health. He was Advisor to the Iraqi Minister of Health in the field of Preventive Medicine from 1998 till 2003. Following that he was a research programs Manager in Washington Hospital Center in association with Johns Hopkins University Hospital. For the past 10 years he was involved in Autism research at the Shafallah Center and Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, where he started the first Autism screening projects for 93 primary schools and all hospitals and special needs centers in Qatar to establish an Autism registry data base and set the prevalence rate for Autism in Qatar.

Dr. Alshaban published three books in the field of Public Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition and has many published articles in medical & non-medical magazines and journals, 6 of the recent ones on Autism in Qatar.

 

 

Short Description of the Lecture:

1. Prevalence and Correlates of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Qatar
In this session I am going to talk about our recent research project on Autism, where we screened more than 9,000 students attending 93 primary schools in Qatar and reviewed all individuals diagnosed with Autism between the ages 5-12 years to establish the Qatari Autism Data Base, and to find the Autism prevalence rate, also to look for the effect of different social and environmental factors on the occurrence of this disorder.
